Many parents wonder when the right time is to start swimming lessons for their child.
For many families, swimming lessons begin from as young as six months through gentle parent-and-child classes designed for babies and toddlers. These early lessons help little ones settle into the water while gradually building confidence and familiarity with the pool.
Lessons take place in our heated indoor pool, creating a warm and comfortable setting for babies and toddlers to enjoy the water.
One of our In2Swim mums, Brooke, started her child in swimming lessons at six months and shares why it was such a positive experience for their family. Watch Brooke’s story here.
Benefits of Starting Swimming Lessons for Babies and Toddlers
Introducing children to swimming lessons at a young age offers many benefits beyond learning to swim.
For babies and toddlers, lessons focus on enjoying the water while gently exploring movement and buoyancy in a safe and supportive environment. Through simple activities and play, children begin to develop coordination and become familiar with the pool and start to develop early water awareness.
Swimming lessons can also be a special bonding experience for parents or carers and their children. With a parent or caregiver in the water, young swimmers feel supported as they participate in activities guided by the instructor.
These early experiences help children develop a positive and confident relationship with the water.
What Happens in an In2Swim Aquatots Class?
At In2Swim, our Aquatots classes introduce babies and toddlers to the water in a gentle, fun and enjoyable environment.
A parent or caregiver joins their child in the pool while our instructors guide families through simple activities designed to help children become confident in the water.
Our pool is heated year-round, helping create a warm and comfortable environment for babies and toddlers.
Activities may include floating with support, gentle kicking, reaching, splashing and moving through the water with assistance. Songs, games and repetition help young swimmers feel relaxed and engaged, while each activity is introduced gradually so children can build confidence at their own pace.
The focus of Aquatots is not on rushing children into swimming independently, but on helping them feel safe, supported and happy in the water.

How Parent Participation Supports Early Swimming Success
Parent participation plays an important role in early swimming lessons.
For babies and toddlers, having a parent or caregiver in the water provides reassurance and helps children feel safe as they explore the pool environment. Being close to a familiar adult allows young swimmers to relax and engage more confidently in the activities guided by the instructor.
Parents also learn simple ways to support their child in the water, which can be helpful both during lessons and when enjoying time together at the pool outside of class.
Helping Nervous Toddlers Feel Comfortable in the Pool
It is completely normal for some toddlers to feel unsure about the water at first. Every child responds differently when starting swimming lessons, and confidence often grows as they spend more time in the water and become familiar with the pool.
Our instructors focus on creating a calm and encouraging environment where children can gradually build trust and familiarity with the pool. Gentle activities, positive reinforcement and the presence of parents all help toddlers feel more relaxed.
Many children who begin lessons feeling a little cautious soon become much more confident as they grow familiar with the routine and activities in each class.
"We absolutely love In2Swim - our 3 kids go here (ages from 3 to 8) and we’re always amazed at how the teachers encourage and inspire the kids and make it such a fun experience. We had tried 2 places in the northern beaches before and this is the best spot! Emily and Amy have been particularly incredible with supporting our youngest who was very reluctant initially to get in the pool - it’s now the highlight of his week. Highly recommend. Great set up, friendly staff and excellent teachers for all stages!"

What to Bring to Your Child’s Swimming Lesson
Being prepared can help make swimming lessons a relaxed and enjoyable experience for both parents or caregivers and children.
For infant and toddler swimming lessons, families should bring:
- A swim nappy for babies and toddlers
- A towel and a change of clothes
- Swimwear for both parent and child
- A warm layer for after the lesson
- Snacks or drinks for afterwards if needed
Arriving a few minutes early can also help your child settle into the environment before the lesson begins.
Our family-friendly change rooms make it easy for parents to get little ones ready before and after their lesson.
After the lesson, some families enjoy spending a little time together at the on-site café, which can be a nice way to relax and chat with other parents.
